  15. FCC closes monitoring stations, field offices
  16.  
  17. As part of a previously announced restructuring of its Compliance
  18. and Information Bureau, the FCC has closed 12 HF spectrum monitoring
  19. stations and six district offices, effective May 29.
  20.  
  21. The monitoring stations shut down were in Belfast, Maine, Powder
  22. Springs, Georgia, Vero Beach, Florida, San Juan, Puerto Rico,
  23. Allegan, Michigan, Kingsville, Texas, Grand Island, Nebraska,
  24. Anchorage, Alaska, Douglas, Arizona, Livermore, California,
  25. Honolulu, Hawaii, and Ferndale, Washington.

  27. District offices closed were in Buffalo, New York, Norfolk,
  28. Virginia, Miami, Florida, Houston, Texas, Portland, Oregon, and St
  29. Paul (Maplewood), Minnesota.

  31. The FCC says ''a downsized professional staff'' will remain in
  32. Buffalo, Norfolk, Miami, Houston, Portland, St Paul, Anchorage,
  33. Honolulu and San Juan.

  35. The FCC is replacing its HF monitoring stations with ''advanced,
  36. automated equipment'' that will remotely control monitoring sites
  37. from an operations center in Maryland. The FCC also plans to install
  38. a nationwide toll-free call center, and service is scheduled to
  39. begin on a regional basis this month. Until the nationwide toll-free
  40. service is available, the FCC says people may call one of the
  41. remaining district offices for assistance. Here's a list of service
  42. facilities for localities where FCC offices have been closed:
